Boost Your Prana to Win Chronic Diseases!

Living cells of our body thrives on external oxygen and internal Prana (Vital energy). Prana is a meta-physical concept beyond genetics and molecular medicine. Each and every cell in the body requires the right quota of its Prana to carry on its biochemical processes in an efficient way. The example is that of uninterrupted power supply necessary for every electrical gadget in right quantities. Just as these equipments would fail if there is any irregularity in the power supply, human organ systems fail to function if they do not get the right quantum of Prana. This also explains why an oxygen cylinder is helpless to a dying person!

Chronic and uncontrolled ailments of modern era are leading cause of death and thus serious health concern today. Common chronic diseases are overweight, hypertension, high glucose and high cholesterol. Several genetic problems such as Muscular dystrophies, Spinal Muscle atrophy, motor neuron diseases are concern not only to doctors but also to the pharmaceutical industries. It is widely accepted notion that medical approach to deal chronic disease is not fool proof. The alternative new approach of healthcare is becoming popular because of failure of conventional approach. Pranayama is a non-pharmacologic healing modality of treatment widely used along with scientific verification.
The word Pranayama consists of two parts, Prana & Ayama. Prana is meta-physical energy that is responsible for living activities. Ayama is extension, prolongation and control of Prana. Prana is different from blood oxygen level. Prana can be described as vital energy that flows continuously from inside us, filling us and keeping us alive. It is fire of life (Jeevan Agni) that manifests in the vitality. According to Yogic texts, the energy back up required for live cellular activity is supplied from the six energy centers (Shadchakra). This Prana energy influences our Neuro-hormonal system and regulates different physiological functions in a living body. The manifestation of Prana in the living body is called Vata in Ayurveda. Thus Prana is the base energy and its manifestation is the Vata. It is the power of Vata that help in the formation of Adenosine trio phosphate (ATP) inside the cell. Prana is thus energy generating force and proper acts of breathing are ways of harnessing that force. This is Vedic perception behind mind and even genetics. Just as electricity is stored up in dynamos, so also Prana is stored up in the Shad-Charkas and plays a vital part in all psycho-physical processes. The Yoga exercises especially Pranayama, along with ayurvedic detox therapies can help in the prevention, low cost management and lasting relief of chronic diseases.
Prana intervention has definite influence on body functions. It has tremendous therapeutic clinical potential. Improvement in the function of neuro-muscular system after practice of Pranayama has been reported by several workers. There are several techniques of Prana intervention. Bhastrika and Kapalbhati are most effective. Bhastrika Pranayama burns up auto-toxins and removes dis-ease due to cellular morbidities (Doshas). This particular Pranayama increases enzyme element (Agni) in the body. Being a powerful breath work, Bhastrika constitutes an effective neuro-muscular regulator. Because of rapid exchange of air in the lungs, there is an increase in the gaseous exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide in to and out of the blood stream. This increases the metabolic rate, producing heat and flushing out cellular wastes and auto-toxins. The rapid and rhythmic movements of the diaphragm stimulate the intra-abdominal visceral organs, toning the digestive system. The force of Prana becomes more intense.
Pranayama also influence our Central nervous system by acting on subtle tasks such as perception, planning, execution, learning and memory. It increases alertness along with relaxation. Pranayama also influence endocrinal activity to balance hormonal profile. Specially Ujjayi Pranayama effects adreno-medullary secretions. Since Pranayama shows a reduction in sympathetic activity, it is vital in the management of stress related disorders. More over controlled breath work increases cardiac output, decreases hepatic, renal blood flow and increases cerebral blood flow in the peripheral vessels. Pranayama produces significant cardio-acceleration. Right nostril breathing activates the sympathetic nervous system and increases the heart rate. Alternate nasal breathing is helpful to bring about a balance in the autonomic nervous system (ANS).
Since Kapalbhati removes alveolar secretions through nose, Pranayama is also very supportive tool in the management of chronic bronchial asthma. Various respiratory parameters show improvement after Pranayama. Evidence now exists to prove that the main difference between cancer cells and normal cells is that the former hardly use oxygen at all. Instead, they get energy from a process termed “glycolisis”, in which energy is extracted from glucose without the use of oxygen. Scientists have discovered that growth of cancer cells proliferate in an oxygen-deprived environment. As cells become cancerous, they stop getting energy from their mitochondria, progress to Glycolisis, no longer take in and release oxygen and wind up oxygen-depleted.
Cautions: Early morning or early evening is the best times for Prana intervention. In the morning, practice of Pranayama is recommended before breakfast and half an hour after a glass of fruit juice or a cup of tea. Try to empty your bladder and bowel before you begin. Never practice after a meal. Though Pranayama is permissible when you are having your periods, avoid it during pregnancy. Certain technique of Pranayama such as Kapalbhati can be risky in those who have abdominal wounds, surgical operations, hernia, peritonitis, appendicitis, prolapses of rectum or uterus, hiatus hernia and recently delivered women.
