* Working up the shaft of a Fishing Fly Rod, there is the first guide, called the "stripping guide". There are three purposes of fly-rod guides, and they are as follows:
* To hold the fishing line to the rod during casting.
* To funnel the line along the length of the rod when shooting (or casting) line (releasing extra line to obtain additional distance).
* To distribute properly along the entire length of the fishing rod, the stress of playing the fish. Since the stripping guide is the first part of the rod the line encounters after leaving the reel, it receives a lot of wear and tear. To reduce friction, the stripping guide is made from an abrasion-resistant material, usually hard chrome or ceramic. Some saltwater fly rods feature two stripping guides.
* The rest of the guides on the fly rod are simple bent pieces of wire called "snake guides". There should be at least as many of these as the fly rod is long in feet. Guides are distributed along a rod according to a specific formula that is unique to each length of rod and are attached to the rod with nylon thread, which is epoxied (or glued with epoxy) or varnished two or three times for durability and protection from the elements. The last guide, which sits at the very, very top of the fly rod tip section, is called the "tip-top".
* Some fly rods, instead of "snake guides," feature ceramic stripping guides or single-foot ceramic guides along the entire length of the rod. However, these guides are so heavy and air-resistant that they change the action of the rod. The whole idea is to lessen the friction between guides, enabling the caster to shoot more fishing line.
* Other parts of fly rods are the following:
* "Ferrules" - These are the joints that connect the sections of multiple-piece rods (for instance, two-piece, three-piece, four-piece, or more piece fly rods]. These are designed to hold the pieces of multiple-piece fly rods together during a full day of fishing, yet they pull apart easily when a fisherman or woman wants to put his or her rod away. Ferrules on bamboo rods are made of nickel-silver metal, while those on graphite, fiberglass rods, and boron/graphite are "self-ferrules," involving a tapered sleeve of the rod material itself, glued to the rod tip tip section, which fits snugly over the butt section.

Fishy's Favorites for Bass, Trout, And Saltwater $9.85 As whimsical as it is pragmatic, this book teaches how to tie a fly and have fun doing so. Following the conviction that good designs can be easily made from everyday materials, Fishy ties his flies using an array of unusual items, from meat trays and sandwich wrappers to kickboards and fake fingernails. These simple, realistic patterns are tier-friendly and beautifully illustrated, and Fishy keeps the number of steps and materials to a minimum. He also shares the story of each fly`s origin and gives tips on how to fish his flies. Among the patterns recommended for bass are the B. C. Shiner, Stir Stick Damselfly, and Electrician`s Hellgrammite; for trout, try the Itsy Bitsy Spider, U. V. Nymph, or Midnight Snack. Saltwater creations include the Bonefishy Fly, Nail-Um, and Duster Streamer. Fishy`s inventive spirit is contagious; he encourages readers to experiment with his patterns and to work on designing their own. |

Walter Trout [Reissue] $12.78 Walter Trout's eponymous debut for Ruf finds the former Canned Heat and John Mayall guitarist at the top of his game, tearing through a number of original contemporary blues songs. The songwriting occasionally is a little undistinguished, but Trout sounds dynamic throughout the album, capable of fiery leads and sensitive, lyrical solos. It was made for aficionados of blues guitar, and it won't disappoint anyone looking for that kind of record. ~ Thom Owens, Rovi Performers: Wally Bass - Vocals (Background); William "Billy" Brown - Vocals (Background); Martin Gerschwitz - Keyboards; Walter Trout - Mandolin, Harmonica, Guitar, Vocals |

Robert Schumann: Piano Quintet, Op. 44; Franz Schubert: The Trout $15.31 There are many remarkable things about this disc coupling Schumann's Quintet for piano, two violins, viola, and cello with Schubert's "Trout" Quintet for piano, violin, viola, cello, and bass -- but perhaps the most remarkable is the sound of Anne Trout's |

Schubert: Trout Quintet; Notturno $13.58 Wolfgang Sawallisch, who has been, among other things, the artistic director of the Bavarian State Opera and music director of the Philadelphia Orchestra, is also a terrific chamber musician. While balancing a career as an operatic and symphonic conductor, Sawallisch has continued his career as a pianist by accompanying singers and, especially, by performing with chamber music ensembles. In this 1997 recording of Schubert's "Trout" Quintet and Notturno with four first-desk Viennese string players, Sawallisch turns in performances that are as charming as they are delightful. The "Trout" is popular in the best sense of the word: melodically memorable, rhythmically vivacious, and emotionally appealing. The Notturno is likewise noble in the best sense of the word: melodically elevated, rhythmically dignified, and emotionally restrained. While longtime listeners may already have their favorite recordings of the "Trout," longtime listeners as well as neophyte listeners will find Sawallisch's performance beguiling. Profil's sound is clear and deep, if perhaps a bit too big for the repertoire. ~ James Leonard, Rovi Performers: Ernst Weissensteiner - Double Bass; Jan Pospichal - Violin; Wilfried Rehm - Cello, Violoncello; Wolfgang Klos - Viola; Wolfgang Sawallisch - Piano |

Schubert: Trout Quintet $13.58 This 2004 Virgin CD of Schubert's Piano Quintet in A major, "Trout," appears merely to be a vehicle to promote the label's roster of rising talents, and questions about this apparently ad hoc ensemble's cohesiveness and cooperation may well be raised. It is clear that pianist Frank Braley dominates the proceedings as the leader and that the strings are unfocused, poorly balanced, and ill-equipped to stand up to his big sound. When Braley periodically pulls back, the Capuçon brothers -- violinist Renaud and cellist Gautier -- are the most prominent players; but violist Gérard Caussé is much less audible and double-bassist Alois Posch is sometimes only heard as an indistinct rumble. Yet as out of balance and spotty as this "Trout" is, the strings at least err on the side of restraint, and the results are not as egregious as they might have been had they tried to outshine each other. Even so, this performance is still unsatisfactory for Braley's prominence and the group's irregularities and occasional looseness, and this recording compares unfavorably with the splendidly polished rendition by the Schubert Ensemble of London on ASV, also released in 2004. Virgin's sound quality is fine, if just a little too resonant. ~ Blair Sanderson, Rovi Performers: Alois Posch - Double Bass; Frank Braley - Piano; Gautier Capuçon - Cello; Gerard Causse - Viola; Renaud Capuçon - Violin |
