Tiger Woods shoots 70, but fails to qualify for FedEx Cup finals
09.13.2010 – Tiger Woods carded a one-under-par 70 to tie for 15th place at the BMW Championship this past weekend, but that wasn't enough for Woods to claim on to one of the 30 available spots for the FedEx Cup playoffs final tournament event.
Woods needed to finish in the top 5 in order to secure a position in the Tour Championship series finale, where the winner will be the recipient of a $10 million bonus. Disappointing for Tiger Woods, as this is the first time the No. 1 golfer in the world has ever failed to qualify for a tournament.
"That's just the way it is. I didn't play well early in the year, and I didn't play well in the middle of the year," Woods told reporters.
Dustin Johnson, a fellow U.S. Ryder Cup star and team member finished the final round at the BMW Championship two-under-par with a 69 to win the BMW Championship by one-stroke on Sunday.
Johnson finished the tournament one stroke ahead of fellow Ryder Cup team member, Matt Kuchar, along with KJ Choi, Ryan Moore, Paul Casey and Kevin Na, who all finished another stroke behind Johnson.
Netting a birdie on the 17th hole ensured Dustin Johnson the edge over Paul Casey for his second tournament win of the 2010 season. This win at the BMW Championship also helped to ease prior disappointments in other majors this season, such as losing a three-stroke final round lead in the U.S. Open and then being penalized two strokes for grounding his club in a bunker when in sight of victory in the U.S. PGA.
Dustin Johnson is also now up in second place, in the FedEx series, while Paul Casey has moved into fifth. Matt Kuchar, after tying for third place at the BMW Championship, now leads those standings.
Tiger Woods will not be playing in any tournaments until taking his place on the Ryder Cup team at Celtic Manor in Wales on October 1. Stay tuned for more up to date Tiger Woods news as he gets ready to take on Europe with this year's U.S. Ryder Cup team.
