Hamlet
William Shakespeare-written-tragedy, Hamlet, is a play, sets in Denmark. It recounts how Prince Hamlet exacts revenge on his uncle Claudius, who has murdered his father. The play vividly charts the course of real and feigned madness and explores themes of treachery, revenge, incest, and moral corruption.
Hamlet is among the most powerful and influential tragedies in the English literature. During Shakespeare’s lifetime, the play was one of his most popular works, and it still ranks high among his most-performed. The play has inspired writers from Goethe and Dickens to Joyce and Murdoch. It has also been described as ‘the world’s most filmed story after Cinderella’.
In the background of the Play is Denmark’s long-standing feud with neighboring Norway, and an invasion by the Norwegian prince, Fortinbras. The protagonist of Hamlet is Prince Hamlet of Denmark, son of the recently deceased King Hamlet. Prince Hamlet is the nephew of King Claudius, his father’s brother and successor. After the death of King Hamlet, Claudius hastily marries King Hamlet’s widow, Gertrude.
The play opens on a cold night at the Danish royal castle, Elsinore. The guards try to persuade Hamlet’s friend Horatio that they have seen King Hamlet’s ghost. After hearing from his friend of the Ghost’s appearance, Hamlet resolves to see the Ghost himself. That night, the Ghost appears to Hamlet and tells him that he is the spirit of his father. The ghost discloses that Claudius murdered King Hamlet by pouring poison in his ears.
The spirit demands that Hamlet avenge him. Prince Hamlet agrees and decides to fake madness to avert suspicion. Busy with affairs of state, Claudius and Gertrude try to avert an invasion by Prince Fortinbras. Claudius gradually gets disturbed by Hamlet’s continuing deep mourning for his father and his increasingly erratic behavior. He sends two student friends of his, named Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, to discover the cause of Hamlet’s changed behavior.
The story centers on Hamlet who is a thirty-year old Prince of Denmark during the twelfth century. Hamlet is mourning the death of his beloved father and the wedding of his mother to his uncle, as par the tradition of Denmark. Hamlet sees his mother's sudden re-marriage as a betrayal of her union with his father. He is shattered and hopeless but worse news is yet to come. An apparition or ghost, appearing in the shape of Hamlet's father, starts haunting him. The ghost claims to be the true spirit of the late king, doomed to walk the Earth for a set time. Hamlet gets shocked when the spirit reveals that Claudius, Hamlet’s uncle and his soon-to-be father, committed the murder of The King because he wanted to claim both queen and crown for himself. Hamlet vows revenge and thus begin the adventure and drama that takes this great work of literature a step further.
The play was adopted into an opera in the Czech Republic. The musician Martin Kumzak discussed the idea with his friend Janek Ledecky, who was a successful pop star and a European Grammy winner. He wrote the book and music, with the orchestration by Kumzak and launched a splendid production that ran for three years in Prague and then another three years in Bratislava. America saw coming home of the Hamlet when it was staged in New Jersey in 2002 at the Civil War Drill Hall Theatre of the Players Guild of Leonia. At that time, it was just a concert version of the condensed version of the play. Created by Beth and Vince Parrillo, it was translated into English and the lyrics were rewritten to match the stage presence. George Harvilla also joined the team as co-lyricist and developed lyrics for more songs.
Hamlet has its full fledge stage appearance in September 2003 at the Lambs Theatre directed by Vince. The cast included Broadway veterans Jeremy Kushnier, Louise Pitre, Paul Kandell and Ric Ryder. Next production was at the Abingdon Theatre in New York City in April 2004. This was directed by Robert Johanson while Jeremy Kushnier, Jan Maxwell, P.J. Benjamin, Josh Tower, Blake Moses, and Jennifer Blood played key roles.
Both the productions were received well by the audience.
